DPI metadata in JPEG files is inconsistent and often ignored by screens. The print sizes below are therefore derived from the pixel dimensions at standard print densities.

These are the maximum print sizes at which the photo still has one pixel for every printed dot of that density. Printing larger simply spreads the same pixels further.

Pixels vs PPI - the short version

A digital image is a grid of pixels. PPI (pixels per inch) is the ratio you choose when you print: divide the pixel width by the PPI to get the printed width in inches. A 6000 × 4000 photo prints at 20 × 13.3 inches at 300 PPI, or a giant 83 × 55 inches at 72 PPI (soft when viewed up close).

Why a bigger DPI number does not add detail

Opening an image and writing “600 PPI” into its header does not create pixels - it only changes the label. A file cannot become sharper by being re-labelled. Real print quality needs actual pixel resolution, which is why photographers start from the sensor megapixels, not the DPI tag.

Which density should I use?

  • 300 PPI - photo books, framed prints, anything viewed from arm’s length.
  • 240 PPI - a common high-quality commercial minimum.
  • 150 PPI - large posters and banners seen from a distance.
  • 72 PPI - a legacy screen figure; irrelevant to modern displays.

What is the difference between DPI and PPI?

PPI (pixels per inch) describes how densely the pixels of your image sit on paper; DPI (dots per inch) is how finely a printer lays ink. For digital photos they are used almost interchangeably.

Does a higher DPI make my image sharper?

No. Sharpness comes from having enough pixels for the print size. Changing the DPI number alone only re-labels the file - it adds no pixels and no detail.

How do I choose a PPI for printing?

300 PPI is the safe standard for close-up prints and photo books. 150 PPI is usually fine for large posters viewed from a distance, and 72 PPI matches on-screen use.
