JPG and BMP sources are re-encoded to PNG when “same as original” is chosen, because PNG is the safe lossless export.
How it works
Once you drop an image, the browser decodes it onto a canvas. The target width and height are calculated from your chosen mode, a new canvas is created at exactly those dimensions, and the photo is drawn into it. The result is then compressed and offered as a download - nothing is transmitted anywhere.
Which mode should I use?
- Pixels - set exact width and height, ideal for a specific layout or upload limit. Keep “maintain aspect ratio” on to avoid stretching.
- Percent - scale both sides by the same factor, handy for a quick “make it half the size”.
- Longest edge - cap the longer side (e.g. 1920 px) and let the other follow, perfect for web galleries.
JPG, PNG or WebP?
JPG is best for photos where a small file matters. WebP gives similar or better quality at smaller sizes and is supported by all modern browsers. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, but files are larger - pick it for graphics, logos or screenshots.
Frequently asked questions
Will resizing reduce the quality of my image?
Downscaling to fewer pixels can look sharper, not softer, because the browser averages detail. Upscaling beyond the original pixels adds no real detail - you are stretching existing pixels.
What does the quality slider do?
For JPG and WebP output the quality slider sets the amount of compression. Higher quality keeps more detail but creates a larger file. PNG output is lossless, so the slider is ignored.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is decoded and resized on your device using the browser canvas. Nothing is ever uploaded.
How large can the output image be?
Output dimensions are limited to a reasonable bound (12,000 px per side and roughly 35 megapixels) so the browser can still process the result comfortably.
