How it works
The tool first works out the largest rectangle with your target ratio that fits your source pixels - so it never upscales or blurs. In crop to fit mode that rectangle is used directly and the overflow is trimmed away. In extend to fit mode the rectangle is grown to hold the whole photo, and the empty band is filled with your chosen colour. The preview shows the exact output you will download.
Which mode should I pick?
- Crop to fit - best when the target shape matters more than the edges, e.g. square profile pictures or 16:9 video stills. You may lose parts of the photo.
- Extend to fit - best when the whole photo must survive, e.g. adding a safe area for a different feed or print. You gain background bars.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the two fit modes?
Crop to fit trims the edges of your photo so it fills the new shape exactly. Extend to fit keeps the whole photo and adds a coloured bar on the sides or top and bottom to reach the new shape.
Will changing the aspect ratio lose quality?
No. Dimensions are computed from your original pixels, so the result is never stretched beyond the source resolution. Cropping removes pixels; extending adds background.
Why did my photo get white bars?
You used extend to fit. Because the source is a different shape than the target, the tool pads the shorter dimension with your chosen background colour so nothing is cropped away.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Cropping and padding are done in your browser with the Canvas API. Your photo never leaves your device.
